How to set up 2FA on social media
Summary:

Two-factor authentication (2FA) stops most account takeovers that start with a stolen password. This guide shows how to turn it on for TikTok, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, which method to choose, and how brand teams can use 2FA without passing codes around.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second step to your login, usually a code from an app or a text message. Even if someone steals your password, they can't get in without that second step. It's one of the simplest ways to stop an account takeover.

Jump to your platform: TikTok · YouTube · X · Instagram · Facebook · LinkedIn

Which 2FA method should you use?

  • Authentication app (like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator): the best choice for most people. Codes stay on your device.
  • Security key: the strongest option, but you need a physical key.
  • Text message: better than nothing, but attackers can intercept codes through SIM swapping.

How to set up 2FA on TikTok

  1. Go to your Profile, tap the menu, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Security, then 2-step verification.
  3. Choose at least two methods, such as an authentication app and email, and tap Turn on.

How to set up 2FA on YouTube

YouTube uses Google's 2-Step Verification.

  1. Go to your Google Account security settings.
  2. Select 2-Step Verification, then Get started.
  3. Follow the steps to add an authenticator app, security key or phone.

How to set up 2FA on X

  1. Open the menu and select Settings and privacy.
  2. Select Security and account access, then Security.
  3. Select Two-factor authentication and choose Authentication app or Security key.

Text message 2FA on X is only available to X Premium subscribers, so an authentication app is the best option for most accounts.

How to set up 2FA on Instagram

  1. Open Accounts Center from the menu on your profile.
  2. Tap Password and security, then Two-factor authentication.
  3. Choose your Instagram account and pick Authentication app, SMS or WhatsApp.

The problem with 2FA for teams

2FA works well when one person owns an account. Brand accounts are different. A social media manager, an agency and a few freelancers might all need to log in, but the 2FA codes go to one person's phone. So teams end up sharing codes in Slack or WhatsApp, or they turn 2FA off altogether. Both leave the account exposed. We explain this in more detail in our guide to 2FA for teams.

Use 2FA without sharing codes

Spikerz gives your whole team secure, web-based 2FA for teams, so everyone can log in safely without relying on one person's phone or passing codes around. You also get a clear view of who has access to each account. Book a consultation to set up 2FA your team will actually use.

FAQs

What is 2FA on social media?

It's a second login step, such as a code from an app, that you need in addition to your password.

Which 2FA method is the safest?

A security key is the strongest. For most people, an authentication app is the best balance of safety and convenience.

Is SMS 2FA safe?

It's better than no 2FA, but text codes can be intercepted through SIM swapping, so an app is safer.

Why can't I use text message 2FA on X?

X only offers text message 2FA to X Premium subscribers. Everyone else can use an authentication app or security key.

What happens if I lose my phone with 2FA on it?

Use the backup codes you saved when you set up 2FA, or follow the platform's account recovery steps.

How can a team share an account with 2FA turned on?

Avoid sharing codes in chat apps. Use a team-based 2FA tool so each person can log in securely.
